Human-reviewed assessment

How Membership Assessment Works

The public form is only the front door. WorkOnward membership decisions are made through structured, human review against published grade criteria, with more rigorous steps added only where the grade requires them.

The review path

Every grade follows the same overall arc, but the amount of evidence and who reviews it changes by level.

1
Choose your grade
Select the membership grade that fits your experience level, then complete the intake form and upload the required application materials.
2
Complete the file
Some grades require supporter validation or additional narratives. Other grades move directly into officer or panel review once the file is complete.
3
Human assessment
A Membership Officer or peer review panel evaluates your application against the published criteria for that grade.
4
Decision and activation
You receive a written outcome. Approved applicants pay dues only after approval to activate membership and receive their member credentials.

What each grade is reviewed on

WorkOnward does not make every grade carry the same administrative burden. Member is designed to be rigorous but practical, while Senior Member and Fellow require deeper evidence and peer consensus.

What to prepare before you apply

The goal is not volume. The goal is a complete, credible file that lets a reviewer understand your fit quickly.

Start with the right grade
The fastest applications are the ones filed at the correct level. Read the grade page first so you are submitting against the right threshold.
Prepare your evidence cleanly
Make your resume current, check dates and titles, and make sure links and achievements can be understood without guesswork.
Use supporters only where required
Some grades need validation from supporters or references. Others, including Member, move directly into file review without that step.
Supporter validation where needed
Supporters receive a time-limited link and respond confidentially. Member grade does not require supporter validation in the standard intake flow.
Fairness and conflict handling
Reviewers are expected to disclose conflicts, work from published criteria, and document significant decisions so the process stays auditable.
Constructive outcomes
A declined application is not a dead end. Applicants receive a written outcome and can return with stronger evidence after the applicable wait period.

What happens after submission

1
Completeness review
The membership team checks that the grade, required materials, and declarations line up with the route you selected.
2
Grade-specific review
Applications are reviewed by a Membership Officer or a peer panel depending on the grade. Higher grades require more formal evidence and consensus.
3
Decision and activation
If approved, you receive a Stripe checkout link. Membership only activates after payment or approved waiver processing.

Possible review outcomes

Decisions are written, not implied. Where additional evidence or an interview is needed, applicants are told directly rather than left guessing.
